CAT Quant Strategy 2026: Arithmetic First
Quantitative Aptitude rewards topic prioritisation and attempt selection inside 40 minutes. What Quant actually tests
- Arithmetic (~35–50%): Percentages, Profit & Loss, TSD, Time & Work, SI/CI, Ratios, Averages, Mixtures.
- Algebra (~25–35%): Equations, Inequalities, Functions, Logs, Indices, Surds, Sequences, Maxima/Minima.
- Geometry & Mensuration: Triangles, Circles, Quadrilaterals, Coordinate Geometry, 2D/3D Mensuration.
- Number System & Modern Math: Divisibility, Remainders, Factorials, PnC, Probability, Set Theory.
Strategy: Arithmetic First, Always
Arithmetic is the engine. Master Percentages, Ratios, TSD, Time & Work, P&L, SI/CI, Mixtures under adaptive difficulty before anything else. Non-engineers especially should exhaust Arithmetic + Algebra (easy/medium) before touching LOD-3 Geometry.
Algebra as the second engine
Equations, Inequalities, Modulus, Logs, Functions, Sequences. Treat them as one continuum: integer solutions, sum/product of roots, graphing, composition. Adaptive drills keep you in the 70–85% accuracy growth band (ZPD).
Geometry & Modern Math: Selective, Not Exhaustive
Triangles (centres, similarity), Circles (tangents, cyclic quads), Coordinate basics, 2D/3D Mensuration. PnC/Probability: Stars & Bars, distributions, conditional/Bayes, geometric probability. Do these after Arithmetic+Algebra accuracy is rock-solid in sectionals.
Attempt selection inside 40 minutes
- Minute 0–2: Scan all 22. Flag 6–8 easy/medium Arithmetic + Algebra.
- Minute 2–20: Solve flagged set. Protect accuracy — −1 MCQ penalty is brutal.
- Minute 20–30: Dip into Geometry/Modern Math only if >80% confidence.
- Minute 30–40: Review flagged, finish partials, no blind guessing.

Non-engineer path (first 8–10 weeks)
Specialist quant programs (e.g. Rodha-style non-eng tracks) succeed because they refuse to start at CAT-hard. Mirror that discipline without paying for a full batch:
- Weeks 1–4: Percentages, ratios, averages, P&L, TSD, Time & Work — untimed until accuracy is stable.
- Weeks 5–7: Linear/quadratic equations, inequalities, basic functions — still accuracy-first.
- Weeks 8–10: Mixed timed sets only in topics you already clear untimed; add geometry basics last.
- Throughout: Adaptive drills in the 70–85% band so you never fake progress on LOD-1 spam or panic on LOD-5.
