CAT Quant Strategy 2026: Arithmetic First

Quantitative Aptitude rewards topic prioritisation and attempt selection inside 40 minutes. This strategy aligns with recent weightage trends and adaptive practice so non-engineers and engineers both climb without wasting months on low-yield topics. What Quant actually tests

  • Arithmetic (~35–50%): Percentages, Profit & Loss, TSD, Time & Work, SI/CI, Ratios, Averages, Mixtures.
  • Algebra (~25–35%): Equations, Inequalities, Functions, Logs, Indices, Surds, Sequences, Maxima/Minima.
  • Geometry & Mensuration: Triangles, Circles, Quadrilaterals, Coordinate Geometry, 2D/3D Mensuration.
  • Number System & Modern Math: Divisibility, Remainders, Factorials, PnC, Probability, Set Theory.

Strategy: Arithmetic First, Always

Arithmetic is the engine. Master Percentages, Ratios, TSD, Time & Work, P&L, SI/CI, Mixtures under adaptive difficulty before anything else. Non-engineers especially should exhaust Arithmetic + Algebra (easy/medium) before touching LOD-3 Geometry.

Algebra as the second engine

Equations, Inequalities, Modulus, Logs, Functions, Sequences. Treat them as one continuum: integer solutions, sum/product of roots, graphing, composition. Adaptive drills keep you in the 70–85% accuracy growth band (ZPD).

Geometry & Modern Math: Selective, Not Exhaustive

Attempt selection inside 40 minutes

  2. Minute 2–20: Solve flagged set. Protect accuracy — −1 MCQ penalty is brutal.
  3. Minute 20–30: Dip into Geometry/Modern Math only if >80% confidence.
  4. Minute 30–40: Review flagged, finish partials, no blind guessing.

Non-engineer path (first 8–10 weeks)

  1. Weeks 1–4: Percentages, ratios, averages, P&L, TSD, Time & Work — untimed until accuracy is stable.
  2. Weeks 5–7: Linear/quadratic equations, inequalities, basic functions — still accuracy-first.
  3. Weeks 8–10: Mixed timed sets only in topics you already clear untimed; add geometry basics last.
